Production artwork for Nativity - December 2004
King Herod and The Stranger discuss their evil plan
Wishing to continue the now established 18 month cycle of productions, and following requests from members, the Committee agreed to restage John Durnin's Nativity in December 2004, with Ragnhild Mørch as Artistic Director. A purpose built, black cloth box, complete with lighting rig, was erected inside the Royal Alexander & Albert School Chapel at Gatton Park, which became an enclosed 175-seat theatre with traverse stage.
For this second production of Nativity the character and storytelling roles were separated and, unusually for the company, the storytelling undertaken solely by younger members of the cast, a large responsibility for some who had never taken part in live performance before, but a decision which exceeded all expectations. The use of an alternative shaped stage; innovative lighting by technical manager Elliot Matthews; haunting music by saxophonist Jan Gabarek and original guitar music by GCT member Newton Faulkner and with a different cast with many new members, created an entirely different production and atmosphere to that of the original version, but still managed to retain its powerful imagery, intensity and wonder.
